What to expect when PMX moves your phone service

When your organization moves its phones to PMX, we do most of the work. Here's what usually comes over and what doesn't.

What PMX can usually set up for you

  • Your existing phone numbers
  • Your extensions
  • Your main greeting and menu ("press 1 for..."), when we can get a copy of the recording
  • Voicemail greetings, when we can get a copy
  • Call forwarding and answering rules
  • Business hours and after-hours routing
  • Supported desk phones

What usually can't be moved

Your old provider usually doesn't let us bring these over, so save anything you need before your old service ends:

  • Old call history
  • Old text message conversations
  • Voicemails stored on the old system
  • Call recordings

Calling and texting can switch over at different times

Moving a number (called a "port") happens in two parts: calls and texting. They're handled separately, so calling often starts working on PMX before texting does. For a short time you may be able to receive texts but not send them. This is normal, and PMX finishes it on our side. See I can't send text messages.

On switch-over day

  • Make a test call to your main number and to a few extensions.
  • Check that your voicemail and greeting work.
  • Tell PMX right away about anything that doesn't ring the way you expect.
